Geotechnical and Transport Engineering

Geotechnical engineering is the branch of civil engineering concerned with the engineering behaviour of earth materials. Transport Engineering is the application of science and technology to the safe, efficient and sustainable movement of people and goods. It encompasses research, policy development, planning, design, implementation, operation and management of all modes of travel.

Geotechnical Engineering and Transportation Engineering are specialist fields grouped within one division. The geotechnical and bitumen laboratories are well equipped for both research and specialist services to industry.

A model mobile load simulator used for accelerated pavement testing was developed in the laboratory (see ITT), and a gyratory compactor was recently acquired.

Transportation research is supported by an information system covering half a million references. Through the Institute for Transportation Technology (ITT) a leading role is played in the Southern Transportation Centre supported by the Department of Transport.

The Pavement Engineering field is led by the SANRAL chair, Prof Kim Jenkins.

Institute for Integrated Transport Technology

The objectives of IGIT are:

  • to serve as a regional centre for research and development projects in transportation;
  • to mobilise the necessary expertise for the execution of these projects;
  • to operate professional training programmes by means of which engineers-in-training can be prepared for registration through internships; and the promotion of tuition and research leadership in the Faculty.

These will be achieved through close co-operation between the Departments of Civil Engineering and Transport Economics at the University of Stellenbosch. All aspects of transport are covered with emphasis on: Pavements, Economics, Safety, Energy, Risk, Construction and Information.
